Photoshop or fix??- Week 5

While in lecture of EME2040, my professor showed us this youtube video, and it was highly disturbing to me. The pressure on girls to look beautiful and flawless is pressed every day into girls minds. Especially when it comes to young girls, it is important for them to know the work that goes into a picture of a model in order to make it look just right.

We also looked at old photo graphs that had been edited by the government in order to change the meaning of the photo. There was a picture of protesters from the Vietnam War, and one of the people had gotten shot. A girl is on the ground hovering over the man whom was shot.

Check out the photo. Pay close attention to the fence post above her head, because in the published photo, it was removed.

With that being said, I have also found an appreciation for photoshop. Building layers with tools is super fun! In class we are learning how to make clouds with grass. There is a tool that allows you to paint multiple blades of grass. After, I went home and downloaded the 30 day free trial of photoshop to learn new things. I am looking forward to our upcoming project using photoshop and I plan on using it a lot in the future.

PR and photoshop?
The Dove Evolution is an extremely famous pr campaign. Dove focused their attention on real women, and the campaign was extremely succesful. Advertising most often times makes their representatives of beauty a skinny women. It can be seen above, that dove did not use that method, and it was PR that made the desision to use real women.

Copy What? - Week 4

Plagiarism- the abuse of ideas and words from the work of someone else.
Copy right- is concerned with original expression. Well taking reporting last semester, I realized how stringent the rules for plagiarism are. If caught you are given a warning, and the second offence you can be kicked out from the University of Florida.
Here is an article on current plagiarism.
While working in any of the communications fields it is extremely important to pay close attention to your writing. Many writers in the past, extremely famous writers have been caught "making up news."

PR and ethics?

In public relations we must always be ethical in our writing. It is our job to build trust with the client and its publics. Using better judgement as to whether or not a certain issue could be destructive can save a company. PR does not mean lie, it just means to move attention away from the negative aspects and more towards the positive ones.

Good bye 1.0, Hello 2.0 - Week 3

The Internet was once a read-only (Web 1.0) environment, with opportunities of social- networking, blogging, etc., it is easy to publish your opinion in a split second! Hello Web 2.0 where the Internet is a read-write environment.

We can not only present our information, but we can participate in it! I no longer need to mail or even email my photos, but I can tag someone or tag myself!

In class we were assigned to choose 3 applications from the Web 2.0 Web site. One of the applications I selected was Farmville, Facebook has many games that are free to play, but highly addictive.
Is the internet taking over people lives? You don't have to leave your home to set up a date, complete a research paper, pay a bill, or set an appointment!

Here is a Web site discussing the issue.

Web 2.0 and PR?
It is important to keep a close eye on a blogs pertaining to a client. Many of the issues concerning the company may be posted all over the internet, making it a public issue of concern. The job of the PR practitioner is to build trust with its publics. Some information that shouldn't be revealed could be destructive for the reputation of the client. This new Internet has also made the job of any communications field to be almost completely electronic. Newspapers and press releases are now read online!
Here is an article discussing the issue.

Educational Technology- Week 2

What is educational technology?
The craft or art (techne in Greek) of education when a person teaches, learns or instructs.
In the past we used tape recorders or video cassettes in order to use technology to teach. We now have access to multiple tools that can enhance the learning process. Educational technology is forever changing and evolving. The common chalk board changed to a white board, which is now the SmartBoard. The SmartBoard allows for teachers to be interactive with their power point presentations.

Here is an example.

Social tools have changed the way that people communicate, such as email, blogging or social networking.

The school-aged child is now supplied with better visual learning. Technology can help gain learner attention and can increase teacher productivity.

Public Relations and educational technology?
The public relations field is now technology pushed. Opinions are posted on blogs and ads are now on youtube. A PR practitioner can grasp the issues within an organization just by researching the multiple blogs. In my class recently I was taught about a Web site that shows all of the blog posts regarding a certain subject matter.
http://technorati.com/

Another site allows for you to enter a zip code and it will tell you the types of people in a designated area.

Copyright Law- Extra post!

What is copyright? You cannot copyright an idea. It is not ethical to copy ideas because we are a free society democracy. There must be a long enough amount of time, so that the author has time to make money for their work.

What can be copyrighted? books, music, dance, movies, pics...................and..... MORE!

Fair Use? It doesn't change original works.

Is this copyrighted?? ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

How does this relate to Public Relations?

I am a public relations major and being cautious about copyright and ethics is extremely important in the field. Every document created by a PR major is to be truthful, in order to create trust between the organization and the consumers, as well as between the PR practitioner and the organization. There is a misconception of PR and that all it does is "coverup" the truth, but we are taught in school to always be ethical.
