Week 14- Using Games for teaching and learning

In class we learned about Second Life, which is a place where you can create your own personal Avatar. To me, this is a bit creepy. You can create a person with their own outfit, job and lifestyle. If used properly this can be fun entertainment, but unfortunately some people that should not be involved in this sort of thing make it dangerous. It is especially important to be cautious of this sort of thing when working with children. Second life has recently created a childrens version, in order to try and prevent this, but it doesn't stop someone too old from going on. Here is an article that discusses the program and how the casino got kicked out.

Careers an Second life?
This could be used in an office as a fun way of communicating with colleagues. Making your character, could be more interesting than a boring email.

Week 13- Distance Education and Virtual Schooling

I was shocked in class to find out that there are sites that offer fake diplomas and degrees. This is scary because the job market is extremely competative. If someone got a job that was less qualified than I was, I would be frustrated. Some degrees, you can purchase without ever having to open a book! Fake degrees! Here you can get a diploma express!

This could be misleading to some people that might believe the site. The less educated people might find this as an easy way out of going for higher education. Hopefully, these degrees won't be taken seriously by the job market. Top officials using fake degrees! This article discusses where people are getting these degrees from.

Distance Education could be beneficial to others, because if you must work, online education can come in handy. It allows you to set a schedule at your own pace, which may be necessary for some.

Week 12- Creating a Professional Web Presence

This week in class we were required to create a professional web presence project. This assignment is useful, because it gives you the opportunity to have an online resume. In this Web 2.0 world that we live in, it is important that information is available online. When applying for a job, you can email them a link to yoor online project, instead of a boring word file. This gives them the opportunity to look at your personal life as well, and more about you. You can also have a portfolio of some of the work that you have created. Here is a link to mine!
How does this relate to PR?
Public relations is merging into a social media world. When you go for a job interview, it is common for the person to ask you to pull up your Facebook page. What you post online can be damaging to your career, so you should always be careful. The article below discusses how dangerous Facebook can be. Facebook can get you fired!

Week 11- Open Source Software

Open source software come in very handy when you are trying to insert pictures into your documents. Gimp is a program that allows you to take a computer shot of whatever is on your screen, and then safe it as a jpeg/gif file. I used this to make several power points this semester. Gimp allows you to crop the photo and make many changes to it! In EME we had to send a picture of our wordle, and I used Gimp. Below is an example of how you can use Gimp.

PR and Open Source Software?
Using programs like Gimp are related to PR and any career that requires you to make any sort of presentation. I have used this program multiple times this semester, since I learned about it in EME. Gimp can be handy, because Photoshop can be super expensive, but this program is free! Below is a video that shows you cool tricks when using the program.

Week 10- Tech Tools

Tech tools can be extremely useful for many things. In class we learned about tools that make projects more interesting. Since I learned about these, I have been using Webspiration for my class projects. Here is a link to my project that I made a web for my Family, Youth, Community Sciences class. Our goal was to reduce teen pregnancy in 3 Gainesville schools. Using free programs to make webs and other tools, can make planning very simple.

PR and Tech Tools?
This is probably one of the most useful things that I have learned from this class. Public relations is all about planning ahead. Using a web in a PR plan, not only makes it more appealing to the eye, but makes your life easier. I am so happy to use Webspiration in the future, and I highly recommend everyone to expiriment with it!

This is a video created by Public Relations Society of America, PRSA. It discusses how important planning is in PR!
